The Taxonomy of Light 2018, Dara Rigal (Optical Fibre Preform Offcuts, Scientific Glass Tubes, Brass and LEDs)
The ‘Taxonomy of Light’ emerged from Dara Rigal’s work as the Artist in Residence for the Optical Networks Group at UCL in the UNLOC Programme. During her investigations to translate their research of ‘unlocking the capacity of light’ to a broader audience, she was drawn to the drop-like remnants from the manufacture of optical fibres. When these offcuts are lit, the phenomena of ‘total internal reflection’ and waveguiding, resulting from different refractive indices of the outer an inner layers of glass, becomes visible. The vessels of light have come to represents the evolution of communications from a metal wire based system to one of optical fibres.
