Theoretical methods for the description of correlated electron and nuclear dynamics: attosecond pump-probe spectroscopy.

The new capabilities of coherent light sources producing sub- femtosecond pulses are explored and exploited to manipulate electronic dynamics in atoms and molecules with attosecond resolution [Ahmadi H et al. 2022 Nature Comm. 13 1242; Cattaneo L et al. 2022 Phys. Rev. Lett. 128 063001]. This seminar will present our most recent theoretical advances to describe novel applications of attosecond pump-probe spectroscopic techniques for the investigation of molecular excitation and ionization processes in gas phase targets. We thus retrieve time-resolved images of ultrafast phenomena at the heart of electron and charge transfer reactions of multidisciplinary interest [Palacios A and Martín F 2020 WIREs: Comp. Molec. Science 10 e1430]. One- and two-color pump-probe schemes will be discussed in depth, using ultrashort pulses with XUV and soft X-ray frequencies. We explore schemes that are nowadays experimentally available in table-top setups using high harmonic generation techniques and in free electron laser facilities.
